This story of Baby Sivok, the preserved locomotive that is usually seen at Ghum Museum on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, is as delightful as it is interesting and, though simplified, this story is also accurate. It is an early learning and dual-read story and colouring book for children. There are two separate texts. The shorter story in large print at the top is for younger children. Below the line is in more detail for older children or parents to read. Look for the small numbers at the end of some words. These relate to the detail notes at the foot of the page.
The idea for the book came from Junhi Han of UNESCO* New Delhi office, who loved the little engine. We were in conversation at the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Headquarters, Elysia Lodge, Kurseong in 2018 and the idea was developed on my long journey back to England.
About the Author
David Charlesworth GRA
My interest in railways and India go back to the earliest memories I have. Born at the home of my maternal grandparents and brought up by them, photographs of the Darjeeling railway and books on India were always at hand. Grandad served with the Royal Air Force from 1939 to 1947 and he was in India and Burma from 1943 to 1946. I still have his books and photographs of India.
Although I am a full member of the Guild of Railway Artists my work is not confined to railway subjects. I have always worked within the professional art and graphic design industry since becoming a Apprentice Litho Artist in 1970.
In Darjeeling District I am known through the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society as a founder member and Board Director and as the Editor and producer of the Darjeeling Mail magazine and designer and author of several of their books. Reproductions of my paintings can be seen on the roadside signs at Sonada and Darjeeling and many homes and hotels in the region.
