Gizem Kıygı is an Istanbul-based urban planner and urban historian. Her practice is built upon merging boundaries of different disciplines and topics like spatial justice, urban childhood, and memory spaces. Gizem Kıygı holds a bachelor’s in urban planning from Mimar Sinan University and a MA in modern Turkish history from Boğaziçi University. From the very beginning of her career, Gizem has been interested in children’s perception of space, participatory design practices and cartography. She combined her professional background and interests in the city maps she produced for children. She is the founder and director of City Detective, an urbanism initiative working on children’s rights to the city. Inspired by her practice with children, Gizem published her first children’s picture book on cartography and urban ecology in 2022. She continues producing city maps, organizing city walks and expanding her map collection from different cities.
