Dr Madan Gopal Mukhopadhyay was born to his parents Mr Bimal Kumar Mukhopadhyay and Mrs Swarnalata Devi in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India in 1943. After his undergraduate studies in medicine, he went to the United States of America in 1967, where he received post-graduate training in medicine and medical oncology. Following his training in cancer treatment, he practised his speciality for over forty years before retiring.
For over fifty years, his short stories, travelogues, and poetry have been published in various Bengali magazines. He has also published several plays, many of which have been staged in Los Angeles and Calcutta. He has also published several books, including Old Picture Post Cards from the British Raj. In 2003, the North American Cultural Association of Bengal honoured him for his contributions to Bengali culture. He was also awarded the Abhoy Memorial Gold Medal and the Pankaj Gupta Gold Medal for his writings and dramatic performances in Bengali.
He is currently retired and resides in the Los Angeles area. In addition to spending time with his family, he devotes his time to writing, travelling, and collecting antiquarian books and coins.
